The Wisdom of Questioning
A reading guide on technical questioning, inquisitive postures, and collaborative ethics.
This document is not about "how to be polite," but how to take a confusing issue and organize it into something that is worthy of another person's input.
In technical communities, asking questions is an invitation to collaboration. The clearer the facts you give, the more honest your reasoning, and the more clearly delineated your boundaries are, the easier it is for the respondent to get on the same map as you and determine where to go next.
Where to Start
If you're reading this for the first time, start with "Introduction" and "Before You Ask" to understand why the tech community places so much emphasis on preparation. When you're really ready to ask a question, go to "When You're Asking" and go through your title, context, symptoms, goals, and attempts, item by item.
If you've gotten a response, don't rush to finish. Follow-up summaries, thank yous, filing and feedback will likewise influence whether someone wants to continue helping you the next time.
